I conceded defeat and organised a couple of billboards, to be put up in suitable places to be seen by prospective voters. Finding suitable places is a little tricky, as many people are not enamoured with the idea of a billboard up on their boundary for the 6 weeks until the election date of 9 Ocotber. However, I have found two supportive businesses, who are happy to have one of my signs! Many thanks to Havelock North Motor Lodge and Oderings for their help, it is much appreciated.

Everywhere I look travelling to school in the morning a new one seems to have sprouted, mostly for middle-aged pale skinned men! As the voting papers don’t go out for a few weeks, the public may get rather sick and tired of looking at them. I have got three new ones locked away in the garage, getting ready to try something new this election. I’m trying to avoid voter-fatigue. I thought I would post a photo for a preliminary glimpse.

I’m just getting organised to put a sign or two up around Havelock North promoting my candidacy for the local body elections in Ocober. I have yet to hand in my nomination form, but will do so this weekend. I have been trying to succintly write my philosophy in 150 words, not easy! My signs have been designed and produced again by Willy at Design Print in Havelock North (he did a great job last election, so good I hardly recognised myself when I drove past every morning on the way to school!) I have also added details to the new website organised by Local Government NZ. All the candidates standing this year have an opportunity to state what the perceive as the top 5 issues in their area. their candidate profile (the 150 words I referred to earlier) and personal details. I went the whole hoog and started Facebook page Mandy Kimber-ward councillor Havelock North.

Last Wednesday I attended, along with 300 others, a leadership forum at the Opera House. The speakers were Sir Stephen Tindall, from the Warehouse and Rod Drury from Xero. They both gave the audience valuable insight into their ideas of successful leadership in their own business experience. Stephen listed the following important points; firstly the importance of mutual respect from everyone in the work team. Something he practises in all experiences in his life. He also suggested everyone must have a vision for what they want in their life. He finally said you must have the right people in your work team for success and have large ears and a small mouth! Listen well and don’t talk too much!

Rod Drury has moved back to Hawkes Bay for the lifestyle and to let his children experience the great childhood he had as a child in Hawkes Bay. Both leaders suggested all new Zealanders should go overseas every five years so they can appreciate how wonderful NZ is! I asked them to give one piece of advice to pass on to my students, Stephen said ”decide what you want to do in life and go and do it”, Rod said :Learn to type!”- spoken like a ICT expert! Both leaders read a huge amount, Rod saying he subscribes to 100 websites each week and both said leaders are not born, but made. The leadership forum is the second year the HDC has hosted a free event at the Opera House in winter, last year the theatre was packed out with 500 plus people who listened to Getrude Matshe, an amazing inspirational speaker.

February is the month to get out and ride around lovely Hawkes Bay on your bike. As the rain seems to have gone, for now, it is a great time to do this. I managed to fit in a 20 km ride today, over to Hastings and back, via the wonderful new Crosses Road cycleway. I feel so much safer on this new track, as the traffic is a safe distance away, not like the treacherous trip down Crosses Road before the cycle way was built. There were times I felt physically terrified cycling on that road, by the behaviour of the motorists. I can remember looking in to the distance to see a car thundering down the road, heading directly for me, passing another car at about 120kph! The road is now only 80 kph and the cyclists are well away. Three councillors, Anne Wilson-Hunt, Wayne Bradshaw (also from Havelock North) and I are the only councillors, so far, who have registered for the bikewise challenge, as part of the HDC team. We are challenging the other councils in Hawkes Bay to ride as much as possible during February, this mayoral challenge needs every member, both staff and councillors to register and ride! The HBRC have the highest number of councillors participating so far. 11% of the HDC have clocked up some km so far, a total of 1960 Km. We will need many more if we are to move above last year’s third place, behind HBRC and Gisborne District Council!
