Havelock North residents are heartily sick of the mindless vandalism by the local young drinkers leaving the Village in the early hours of the morning. Often I hear people blaming drinkers, who come in from other places, like Napier and Hastings, however I find it most unlikely that these are the “hooligans” that are responsible for continuously breaking the flowering cherry trees outside our house. These trees have been replaced four times by HDC and last weekend, the surviving tree was broken in half! Such a waste of rate-payers money, the youthful vandals’ parents are paying for their childrens stupidity.

I was quite fascinated to read a letter to the Hawkes Bay Today complaining about the “noisy” devices orchardists and grape growers use to keep their precious crops safe from destruction. All I can say to the writer is get a good pair of earplugs and as my students would say; “get a life”! I too, get woken by the frost protectors, whether it be windmills or helicopters, I too get up before 6.30 each morning to go to work and try to add value to secondary students (who keep me on my toes) but I realise that these measures are only taken when frosts threaten and the crops need saving. All Hawkes Bay residents depend on this primary produce and we all would be the poorer with out them.
