Last Saturday were the last games for Hawkes Bay primary schools’ netball. Both my grand daughters play for Te Mata School and were looking forward to their last games for the season. Sadly Maddi was recovering from swine flu, so unable to play. Tia played three games in various positions, doing especially well in GD and GK, as she is lovely and tall. All three of their games were won in the round-robin tournament they played. I am really looking forward to when the new netball courts are ready for action at the Regional Sports Park next May. It will certainly help getting to watch both grand daughters play, as they will be at the same place!

Yesterday, a new sponsor was announced for the Sports Park, the Higgins Group Holdings, are to give $500,000 towards the roading on the outside and inside of the Sports Park. Inside the park, the main road at the complex would be called the “Higgins Boulevard”. The Higgins company are to be forming the roads, carparks and netball courts as part of the next stage of the development. As I am a great believer in the urgency and importance of replacing the Hastings Netball courts, this is great news for the netball players of the area ( including my grand daughter Tia, who is developing into a great GK) As a community, we have to be seen to promote physical fitness as a way of life and part of this, is providing the facilities to enjoy working on our fitness. Playing netball is a crucial part of this.

Last night I watched the All Whites win in Wellington, enabling them to go to South Africa for next year’s World Cup. The Engineer was at the game and told me the atmosphere was electric. I could see that no-one in the crowd wanted to go home after such an exciting win. I do remember the last time the All Whites were at the World Cup in 1982, as later in 1985 I worked at Watties in Gisborne with one of the 1982 All Whites. As soccer (I must remember to call it football!) is a growing sport in HB, such a win is expected to accelerate this involvement. My grandson will be facing this dilemma very soon, as I come from a rugby playing family (my father, Ian Shaw, captained Poverty Bay in the late 1940s) and my son-in-law, Adam has played football for many years. The Regional Sports Park should be a great asset when this expected growth in football does happen.Go the All Whites.

I am a half glass full sort of person, I always look for the positive side of everything. I have had a great deal of unexpectedly sad things occur in my life in the last five years, and I still have been able to remain a positive person. Therefore I am sick and tired of reading negative, “shoot the tall poppy” articles in the local papers. It is time for Hawkes Bay residents to support each other when attempts are made to provide more employment or sporting opportunities for our young people. The Regional Sports Park will provide the chance for many of Hawkes Bay’s youth to try new sports, such as track cycling, on bikes sponsored by local businessess. There may be a prospective champion, as I write this, at one of the HB schools. Come on Tom, look at the positive side for once and stop your moaning.

Now the hurdles of legal challenges to the Sports Park have been dealt with, development can now progress. I believe this facility is extremely important for the youth of Hawkes Bay and for the future.
